wLBS is the world’s first completely open wireless geolocation system. This application collects information about Wi-Fi access points, records their addresses and sends them to the wLBS server. It employs an algorithm which upon receiving the data from a client produces the exact real world coordinates, which are drawn on a map (in this case a Google map on the iPhone).
- Completely open source (the clients, the APIs and the server software)
- High level of data security (your location is always encrypted)
- Good accuracy (achieving GPS-level coordinates in typical conditions)
- Globally extensible (By deploying your own wLBS Server you can provide geo-services in your area).
This is our first public release of this service.
The Wi-Fi geo-database currently covers only the city of Kiev, Ukraine, but soon will be global.
